I've always been conflicted. Is it okay to mix gold tone and silver tone jewelry?

Growing up my Mother always swore it was WRONG WRONG WRONG. She was right about a lot of stuff; but, I must say Ima have to question this one.

I love love rose gold (18k) and am thinking I'm going to have to add some gold (14k) and white gold to the mix; but, not Platinum the Patina has a distinct difference to me...
